How much dancing can you fit into a long weekend, a week?  This program is designed for the social dancer who wants to take their dancing to the next level and put into practice while here in Cuba.   Take lessons in the morning, have studio practice time in the afternoon,  and go out social dancing in the evening with instructors who will challenge you to apply what you are learning on the dance floor.

Escape to Cuba for a long weekend and trade your 5 hours of dancing at home on a Friday night for 35 hrs of dancing with Tierra Kaliente!

Beginners and experienced dancers welcome.  No experience or partner required.

About Tierra Kaliente

Tierra Kaliente is one of the hottest dance companies in Havana.  They have performed and taught Cuban dance in Europe, South America, and the United States.  In Cuba, they have hosted travelers from France, China, Colombia, USA, Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Israel, United Kingdom, Australia, Chile, and Argentina.

Karelia Despaigne, the director, is described as being “on an entirely different plane” from other instructors.  She teaches with precision and humor.  For the dancers with Tierra Kaliente, dancing goes beyond learning technique – it is about spreading Cuban culture and connecting people through music and movement.

What to Expect

Dance Holidays are hosted programs perfect for a solo traveler and fun for groups.  You have a host coordinator who will meet you at the airport, guide you through logistics, help keep things running smoothly, and connect you with people and places.  Your host is your local contact.

The first night you arrive, your host will meet you at one of the popular clubs or concert halls for a night of music and dancing.  Shake off your travels and warm up for a weekend or week-long immersion in Cuban dance.

Your days will start with two 1-hour dance lessons with Tierra Kaliente in the morning.  In the afternoon you are free to explore on your own, add a trip to the beach, a city tour in a classic car, or dancing on the Malecon.  We leave room in your schedule for each trip to be unique.

At night attend a show at the famous Tropicana or Cabaret Parisien, meet instructors at the Salsa Club 1830 or for a concert at Casa de Musica Miramar.  Depending on how long you stay, you will have 2-3 nights of social dancing with dancers from Tierra Kaliente.

Accommodations

We place you in comfortable guesthouse rooms where you can expect to have hot water, decent water pressure, air conditioning, at least one exterior window, and an en suite or private bathroom.  Many have either a balcony or a terrace for guest use and offer breakfast and a few services for additional fees.

This is what we recommend to most travelers as it allows you more opportunities to experience daily life in Cuba, supports locals, and is often a richer experience than staying in hotels.

That said, we can make arrangements for independent apartments and standard to boutique high-end hotels depending on your preferences.  Prices may vary.

U.S. to Cuba Travel

Yes, you can travel legally to Cuba as a US citizen or resident.  This program is designed to support legal travel to Cuba under an OFAC General License Category 8, In Support of the Cuban People.  31 CFR 515.574

See our article on U.S. to Cuba Travel for more details.

Itineraries
3 Day Dance Holiday

DAY 1:Havana by Night

Meet your host in a cafe or bar that is convenient for you. You’ll have time for introductions, go over details of your schedule and answer questions about what to expect.

Later that evening you will meet again at one of the main concert venues with live music to soak in the sounds and rhythms of Cuba. The first night is all about ‘sueltas,’ enjoying the music, letting loose, and dancing. No partner required.

In the course of the night you will also have opportunities to learn more about the world of music and dance in Cuba. Learn about the evolution of Cuban music and dance, current trends, and the economic and societal impacts of the rise of cuentrapropistas, or private businessmen and women working in the dance industry in Cuba.

DAY 2 - 3:Dance Holiday

Wake up ready to go. It’s off to the dance studio for 2 hours of lessons with a senior instructor followed by a break for lunch and then an optional afternoon activity of your choice.

Explore the city on your own or book additional experiences with us. You could take a trip to the beach at Playa del Este for an afternoon in the sand complete with a lesson in body movement and styling or head out on the town in a classic car for a tour of the city. See key landmarks and attractions in Havana, learn a bit of history and stop along the way to dance your way around the city.

In the evening, hit the matinee show at Casa de Musica Miramar, visit the rooftop bar at Hotel Inglaterra or one of the other hotspots for dancing in Havana. An instructor will join you to encourage you to apply what you are learning on the dance floor.
